“El Amor en Los Tiempos de Cólera”, written by Colombian Nobel prize winner Gabriel García Márquez, translates to “Love in the Time of Cholera”. This story takes place in South America and follows 2 lovers troubled by war and the outbreak of cholera, a fatal intestinal infection.

The cover aims to use color and symbol to intertwine the idea of love, time, and danger. Green is understood as a signal for safety and as an invitation to go, whereas red is associated with danger and passion. The red flower is a symbol of the Camellia flower which was found In many of Florentinos letters to Fermina.

The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen follows a half-French, half-Vietnamese man serving as a spy for the Communist forces in the final days of the Vietnam War. This mixed identity inspiring the use of red, white and blue for france, and red and fire to symbolize the Vietnamese Flag.

Those who were left victims of the Vietnam war, have seen the people in their community suffering to no end. The Sympathizer is an amazing book that touches on those sufferings in a light, bittersweet way. This book is an absolute philosophical and psychological masterpiece.
